IOTA Phi Lambda
Sorority, Inc.

Dear Friends of THE DELEGATE,
It is a pleasure for the officers and members of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. to extend greeting to the entire staff of MELPAT Associates on the occasion of the 20th Year Anniversary of the publication of DELEGATE 1985. Mel Patrick and his staff are all to be commended for helping to bring all Black organizations into the mainstream with much needed publicity. Do continue your excellent work as you serve people of color. May success and good health be yours as the years come and go.
Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc., a Greek letter organization of business and professional women with college training, has continued to grow. As a result of Restructuring, the sorority now has a two year term for the National President-Elect who then moves up to the office of National President for two years. A National Executive Director assists the Executive Board in carrying out many activities. Five regions, Central, Eastern, Farwestern, Southern and Southwestern are in place with a regional director to coordinate the various activities within the region. Undergraduate chapters on key college campuses throughout the country continue to grow and flourish as they motivate fellow students to become cognizant of opportunities in the business world and as they assist with tutorial services. Nationally, chapters are committed to programmatic thrusts related to American Education Week, Black History Month, Iota Business Week, the National Assault on Illiteracy Project, and Founder's Day Observances.
There are two auxiliary groups to the sorority; they are the Lambda, who are the husbands of the sorority members and it women's auxiliary, and the Pelatis Auxiliary which is made up of women in the community who are interested in Iota's goals, objectives and programs. The youth groups that Iota sponsors are the Future Iota Girls (FIGS), the Gems, and the Future Intellectual Leaders (FILS), the young men who receive assistance in many areas.
Dr. Evelyn Sears Peevy of Norfolk, Virginia is currently serving as National President of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority and its 3,500 members in 90 cities, the Vigin [[Virgin]] Islands and India. Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. has a soror who serves as a Non-Governmental Observer at the United Nations, it is an affiliate of NCNW, and holds membership Conference on Civil Rights, the NAACP, the Urban League, Black Leadership Roundtable in addition to the National Assault on Illiteracy Project.
Biennially, Iota presents its coveted award, The Lola M. Parker Achievement Award to a women in business or the professions, who has made outstanding accomplishments. The Mahala S. Evans Award is presented to the national Soror of the Year on a biennial basis. Over $6,000 in scholarships is awarded each year to young ladies who plan to pursue a business career based on national competition. Local chapters of the sorority also present scholarship awards in addition to the regional scholarships that are given.
All in all, Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. is on the move, and many viable things are taking place as the business and professional women who belong to this organization continue to meet the challenges of changes that confront women of color during the decade of the Eighties.
