BERNICE F. POWELL

Helping others to realize their fullest potential is the thrust of Bernice F. Powell's community activism. As president and chief executive officer of the New York Coalition of 100 Black Women, Powell is its spokesperson and the leader of a number of efforts designed to improve the quality of life for black women in the city. The coalition is compromised of some 700 black professional women.
Under Powell, the coalition has expanded many of its programs which emphasis the provision of role models and mentors to guide the development and career advancement of young black women. Among them are a program for teen mothers in which they are matched with adult black women who have already established careers and home life. Others include a cultural enrichment program for high schoolers interested in arts careers; a summer internship program servicing 200 inner city students and a college role model program.
However, her concern does not end with black women, but extends to the black community as a whole. Through her leadership, the coalition has enlarged its political education programs and convened along with eight other organizations in New York, Operation Big Vote 1984. The effort resulted in the registration of 100,000 new voters.
Prior to heading the coalition, Powell was the public information office of the Women's Division in the office of former Gov. Hugh L. Carey.
Currently, Powell is President of the Board of Trustees of the Helen Fuld School of Nursing at Harlem Hospital and is a member of the New York City Commission on the Status of Women.
