Individual Recipient

Dave Winfield is a professional baseball player with the New York Yankees. 

Mr. Winfield began his professional baseball career with the San Diego Padres in 1973. In 1980, he signed a ten-year, multi-million dollar contract with the New York Yankees, one of the most lucrative contracts ever given to a professional athlete. 

Mr. Winfield is perhaps best known for his community and youth-oriented projects, which are administered through the Winfield Foundation. Designed to provide motivation, exposure and opportunities to underprivileged youngsters, the Winfield Foundation will assist more than 550,000 individuals and families over the next seven years.

Mr. Winfield is a member of the board of directors of the Hackensack Medical Center and is a member of the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. 

The recipient of many awards, Mr. Winfield served as spokesperson for a variety of public service organizations, including the New York City Partnership, the Arthritis Foundation, the United Way, the United Negro College Fund, the Urban League and the New York Area Blood Banks.

Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, Mr. Winfield graduated from the University of Minnesota with a B.S. degree in political science. He was also named a Williams Scholar for his academic excellence. 

Rachel Robinson is president of the Jackie Robinson Development Corporation and the Jackie Robinson Training and Consultation Associates. 

Mrs. Robinson began her career in 1963 as a psychiatric nurse at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. In 1965, she was named director of nursing at the Connecticut Mental Health Center and in 1972, was named an associate professor of clinical psychiatry at the Yale School of Medicine and an assistant professor at the Yale School of Nursing. In 1973, she founded the Jackie Robinson Development Corporation (JRDC), a real estate management and development firm, which trains employees for management positions within the public sector. The JRDC has completed 1,300 units of low-to-middle income housing. 

Mrs. Robinson graduated from the University of California School of Nursing with a B.S. degree in nursing and from New York University with an M.A. degree in psychiatric nursing. She also received honorary degrees from St. Johns University and Springfield College. 

Mrs. Robinson was the recipient of the Florence Nightingale Award, the OIC Distinguished Humanitarian Award, the Operation PUSH International Award, the Candice Award for Distinguished Service and the Lillian Morgan Award for Distinguished Service.

Mrs. Robinson serves as chairperson for the Jackie Robinson Foundation and as a trustee and secretary of the board of the Phelps Stokes Fund. She is also a member of the American Society for Training and Development, the Private Industry Council and New York City Partnership.
