After a frustrating search for employment in his field, finally in October 1951, Carl received an appointment as Construction Inspector (General) with the U.S. Corps of Engineers at Wright Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio.
Here he remained for a period of ten years serving in positions of ever increasing responsibility in construction of highly sophisticated labs and facilities for the U.S. Air Force. Carl has attended a substantial number of post graduate courses which have broadened his technical and administrative skills. He has been a Registered Architect in Ohio since 1958, performing limited practice for selected clients.

It was here in Dayton in July 1954 that he married Doris Hazel Bass, a Columbus, Ohio native who attended O.S.U. during the same period as her future husband. The Wilsons have one son. Incidentally, they are planning a reception at Wright-Patterson Officers Club in Dayton Ohio of July 29th of this year to commemorate their 30th Wedding Anniversary.

In February 1962, Carl accepted an assignment as Assistant Resident Engineer at the Asmara Residency in Ethiopia, East Africa. Asmara is the capital of the northern province of Eritrea and is located on a plateau 8,000 feet high approximately 120 kilometers from the Red Sea. The climate is so delightful that the Ministry of Tourism describes the weather as "13 Months of Sunshine." The Wilsons became close friends with innumerable Ethiopians from all walks of life. Here Doris became "mother" to the Peace Corps contingent who were assigned as teachers in the city Asmara and throughout the surrounding villages. Original assignment was for one year; however, the Wilsons become so involved in this area that they remained in this garden spot of Africa for almost five years, finally accepting reassignment back in Dayton, after a short unaccompanied tour by Carl in MunsanNi, Korea. While in the Far East, Carl served as Installation Planning Officer for the Second Infantry Division, U.S. Army.

Carl Supervised construction on a number of large federal projects including the U.S. Post Office in Canton, Ohio; the IRS addition in Covington,Kentucky; the $25,000,000.00 U.S. Post Office in downtown Baltimore, MD; the $50,000,000.00 Bulk Mail Center in Sharonville, Ohio, which distributes by computerized automation, bulk mail for Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio.
After serving as Assistant Area Engineer for Ohio, responsible for $70,000,000.00 of construction placement each year, Carl accepted the position of Director of Building Regulations for Montgomery County. He supervised a staff of 17 technical and administrative personnel whose mission was to examine and approve plans for residential, commercial, and industrial construction; perform periodic and final inspections in all disciplines, subsequently issuing certificates of occupancy for completed facilities; mediate and render decisions in alleged zoning infractions; and respond to queries from citizens on obtaining compliance with the building code.

After serving in this position for over three years, he accepted the position of Deputy Director of Public Works in the Celeste Administration, the first black to be so honored, where he served the citizens of Ohio as final signatory for the state on design and building construction projects exceeding $300,000,000.00. His staff of 400 provides maintenance and security for state owned buildings; leases and private property for state agencies; provides transcription services for various offices of state government; and administers canal and lake land properties including submerged land under Lake Erie and inland feeder lakes.

Both the Wilsons are world travelers. During their travels they established strong friendships in all sections of this continent and throughout the world. They look forward at some future date, to a leisurely visit to renew old acquaintances and enjoy the scenic wonders both in this nation and abroad.
