ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Broadway star, recording artist, concert headliner, actress and dancer all can be used to describe Phyllis Hyman. Perhaps New York Times theater critic, Walter Kerr, put it best when he wrote, "(she is and entertainer) who deserves all the review of "Sophisticated Ladies." Hyman won a Tony nomination for her role in this hit play about Duke Ellington's won a Tony nomination for her role in this hit play about Duke Ellington's music when she added Broadway to her already impressive list of accomplishments.

Hyman began her musical career several year earlier in her hometown of Pittsburgh, appearing and touring with groups such as New Directions and All the People of Miami. After more than three years with these groups, Phyllis came to New York City where her solo club act drew the attention of industry giants like Norman Connors. Connors invited Phyllis to sing on his album "You Are My Starship" Connors invited Phyllis to sing on his album "You Are My Starship" and to tour with him and Michael Henderson. Soon to follow was Phyllis' first album, simply titled "Phyllis Hyman."

She followed that release with another hit album, "You Know How to Love Me," and "Children of Sanchez." Next, came Phyllis' triumph on Broadway in "Sophisticated Ladies," as well as her third album, "Can't We Fall In Love Again."

Phyllis is again branching out with an acting appearance in the feature film, "The Doorman" and teamed up with McCoy Tyner last year on his new LP.

The late Count Basie remarked, "They're a hard act to follow," referring to the group that had just opened a show for him in their native Philadelphia a few years ago. The praise was for Pieces of a Dream, a relatively new jazz combo with remarkable talents. The trio of Cedric Napoleon, bassist; Curtis Harmon, drummer; and James Lloyd, pianist; was formed in Philadelphia in 1975 and in short order became one of the hottest groups in the city. Critics, fellow musicians and audiences alike, soon made Pieces of a Dream a national musical force.

Their national following was increased by the release of the group's debut album, "Pieces of a Dream" (1981), followed by "We are One" (1982) and "Imagine This" (1983). Their talents soon spread beyond the U.S. shores with an impressive tour of Japan in 1983 as one of the headliners in the prestigious Aurex Jazz Festival.

With talented performers like Phyllis Hyman and Pieces of a Dream, the 1984 KOOL CITY JAM in Oakland promises to be the high energy concert of the year. The KOOL CITY JAM concert tour is sponsored by the makers of KOOL cigarettes, Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation, headquartered in Louisville, Ky.
