In 1979 five disabled men–two paralegics [[paraplegics]], two quadriplegics, and one amputee ranging from 23-58 years of age got together to form A.W.A. realizing from their own personal experiences the plight and problems of people confined to wheelchairs and the general handicapped population.Since the conception of A.W.A., we have grown to a total of 69 members and voluntary staff both wheelchair and able-bodied persons, who through their time and infinite support has helped build A.W.A. into a valuable organization that will be of service not only to its members, but to the general community. All proceeds from gifts, contributions, and fund raising of A.W.A. will go towards two (2) major projects:

(1) A.W.A. has acquired 7.24 acres of land in Virginia and is in the process of building a summer camp for children and a year round sports training complex for wheelchair and abled-bodied athletes.

(2)We are also in the process of locating and negotiating for land space, throughout the city and private sector, in which we intend to build an independent living center for senior citizens and wheelchair bound persons in the New York City area.

We are currently involved in a project to service the community through a van service. A.W.A. will purchase a wheelchair van to transport wheelchair bound people as an alternative to the high cost of ambulette service presently existing. This service will travel throughout the inner-city with safe and convenient, door to door service; also two days a week this van will be donated to a wheelchair sport team free of charge.

A.W.A. has prepared a tentative calendar of its activities for 1985:

(1) February - Disco

(2) June - August "Heels and Wheels" basketball classic

(3) Two fund raising raffles during the year

All inquiries concerning programs and projects of A.W.A. can be made to the organization's president, Gregory Morris, 50 West 139th Street, Apt 2M, New York, N.Y. 10037.
