MEDIA WOMEN MEET IN 19th ANNUAL CONVENTION

The ten Black mayors of the State of New Jersey, Priscilla Anderson, Willingborough Township, Bernard Brooke, Teaneck, Thomas H. Cooke Jr., East Orange, Walter A. Gaines, Lawnside,Kenneth A. Gibson, Newark, Lawrence Lawson, Neptune Township, Melvin Primas, Camden, Richard L. Taylor, Plainfield, James Usry, Atlantic City and Edward Wanzer, Chesilhurst were special honorees at the closing banquet of the 19th Annual Convestion of the National Association of Media Women, Inc. held recently in Atlantic City at Caesar's Boardwalk Regency Hotel. James Usry, mayor of Atlantic City, expressed how important is[[it]] is "for the media to reflect integrity, clarity and truth" which he indicated was not happening in Atlantic City. From the group of mayors he presented a gift of "love and affection" to Alyce Martin Ware, National President of NAMW.
Thomas H. Cook, Jr., Mayor of East Orange and Vice President of the National Conference of Black Mayors, presented a Certificate of Appreciation from that organization to Past National President of NAMW and Convention Chairperson, Atlanta's Xernona Clayton Brady, Director of Public Affairs, Turner Broadcasting System.
At this Awards banquet NAMW's highest in-organization award, the Ida B. Wells Media Woman of the Year, named for the pioneering Black newswoman, was won by Jeanne Jason Wright, Executive Editor of the National black Monitor and First Vice-

The Metropolitan New York Chapter, the founding chapter of the National Association of Media Women, Inc., honored Jeanne Jason Wright, Chapter First Vice-President and Executive Editor of National Black Monitor as its Media Woman of the Year at the Founder's Day-Media Woman's Day observance on September 23, 1984. At the same time, several of New York City's outstanding TV persons received awards. Seated, left to right: Lois K. Williams, Metropolitan New York Chapter Lay Member of the Board. Also cited but unable to attend, Ponchitta Pierce, WNBC-TV Host and Co-Producer "Today in New York" as "Pioneer in Print and Electronic Media" (she was out of the country) and Carol Martin, WCBS-TV News, Co-Anchor and Correspondent for "Excellence in Communication" (she was out of the city).
