NEW YORK Art on the Road 1984

"New York: Art on the Road 1984" is an exhibition of posters representing the State's cultural institutions organized and sponsored by Philip Morris Incorporated. The reception was held on November 29, 1984 at the Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., State Office Building.

NEW YORK: ART ON THE ROAD 1984 has been expanded since it first appeared on October 10, 1979. Its opening took place in our nation's capital as part of "The New York State Festival," an event that saluted Congress for its support and understanding of New York's central role in the nation's cultural life. I was thrilled to be at that opening to help convey the message to out national leaders that we New Yorkers thoroughly enjoy our role as a vital cultural resource for the entire nation-and beyond.

Since that first opening, the exhibition toured New York beginning in our State's own capital. Before being revitalized for its new tour, it just came home from a well-received tour of Japan, demonstrating once again our State's artistic influence throughout the world. Following our lead, other states in the union have assembled similar exhibitions, with the support of Philip Morris Incorporated, to extol their cultural treasures.

Our State's rich cultural heritage has led us to our position of leadership in the arts. We are ever mindful of that fact and feel truly blessed that artists in all of the disciplines at one time or another seem to gravitate to New York. Some stay but a while and move on, while others spend their creative lives in our midst.
On behalf of our New York State Council on the Arts, the largest state arts council in the nation, I would like to thank Philip Morris Incorporated for its generous support in making this exhibition possible. As the exhibition begins its second world wide tour, we exclaim again: New York loves art and New Yorkers love sharing out arts with the world.
