Wilson was born in Warren, Ohio, the second offspring in a family of four children. His father M. Robert Wilson, Sr., was born in Danville, Virginia and was a journeyman Brickmason; his mother, the former Georgia Crawford, a native of Jonesboro Tennessee, was valedictorian of her college class, an accomplished pianist, and an elementary schoolteacher prior to her marriage. The family was reared in Sandusky, Ohio, a small city on Lake Erie approximately half way between Cleveland and Toledo. Carl entered the public school system of Sandusky and ultimately matriculated from Sandusky High School. Shortly thereafter, Pearl Harbor was bombed and Carl was inducted as a private in the U.S. Army in October 1942. In February 1946, Carl was honorably discharged as a Technician 5th Grade. Taking advantage of the G.I. Bill of Rights, he entered the School of Architecture of the Ohio State University. He completed the five year course in June 1951 and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Architecture. Pursuit of engineering degrees by black students was discouraged at that time and Carl became the first black graduate of the O.S.U. School of Architecture in over 50 years!
