Chums Incorporated

Chums, Inc. Twenty-fifth Conclave
$5,000 to United Negro College Fund
$5,000 to Urban League
$1,000 to Mississippi Children's Defense Fund

A Silver Jubilee brought together over three hundred (300) Chums and Hums from 26 chapters spread over 16 states during it's 25th (Silver) Conclave held in Jackson, Mississippi from October 17-20, 1985.

Mrs. Ponjola Brown Priest, National President and Charter Member of the Baltimore, Maryland Chapter presided over the conclave. Her National Theme "A Renaissance of Chums: Unity, Committment and Love" was portrayed throughout the Conclave.

During the general session a National Ad hoc Committee was formed to plan a 1988 Bahamas Conclave. The Freeport Princess Hotel has been chosen for accomodations.

National efforts included the donation of $5,000 to the United Negro College Fund, received by Norma Alexander, UNCF representative; $5,000 to the Urban League, received by the Honorable Doris Smith, Jackson City Councilwoman and local President of the NAACP. $1,000 was donated locally to the Mississippi Children's Defense Fund received by Robert Bell, representative. The President's award went to the Raleigh, NC Chapter for their service throughout the past year. Fashions by Shirley Miller, "A Nostalgia Collection" depicting the late 40's and early 50's brought back cherished memories to founding Chum's Mary Ward Barnes, Joyce Brown and Theodora Jackson Cora who were in attendance from Norfolk, Virginia.

Margaret Walker Alexander, author of Jubilee gave the keynote address. Using the National President's Theme of Unity, Commitment, and Love in her address to the Conclave was well received. May we continue along that vein.

Patricia Ward Ellis, Jackson, Mississippi Chapter Founder and Conclave Chair and Mavis L.P. James, Jackson Chapter President along with the other twenty-two (22) members of the Jackson Chapter extended Southern Hospitality in the Mississippi way to all in attendance.

Other National Officers are: Mrs. Lucille Gayle, Vice President-Washington, DC; Mrs. Bernice McDaniels, Corresponding Secretary-Baltimore, MD; Mrs. Ann Bush, Recording Secretary-Washington, DC; Mrs. Gertrude Harvey, Treasurer-Atlanta, GA; Miss Allison Jordan, financial Secretary-Hampton, VA; Mrs. Loretta Carroll, Parliamentarian-Jackson, MS; Mrs. Lena Dabney, Historian-Journalist-Norfolk, VA; Mrs. Ruby Sapp, Public Relations-New York, New York; Members at Large-Mrs. Hazel Williams-Northern, NJ, Mrs. Emily Wilson-Fairfield Co. National President Ponjola Brown Priest upon arrival at Ramada Renaissance.

Our theme, "A Renaissance of Chums; Unity, commitment and Love" is indeed most appropriate. There is a revival of love and commitment to our organization. We are more determined than ever to keep the chum rose as beautiful as when it was a young lovely bud. We are more dedicated to our ideals and purposes than ever before because we have grown in knowledge and understanding. We are grateful to those wonderful women who gave so much of themselves through the years. We love them for their patience, perseverance, and dedication and sincerely thank them. We're confident that our future is bright. Our aim, as archers, is to continue the love, graciousness, concern and humility that were so beautifully exhibited at our very first conclave in Norfolk, Virginia in October, 1956.
