TRIBUTE TO EDGES FOUNDER
RUTH ALLEN KING
In celebration of her
October 8, 1985 75th Birthday,
Delivered at the 13th Annual Luncheon
of THE EDGES GROUP, INC.,
Thursday, October 31, 1985, at the
New Marriott Marquis Hotel, New York City,
by EDGES' Vice President, Ramona Y. Frazier,
Director of Personnel, Executive Office,
F. W. Woolworth Company

"RUTH ALLEN KING was born to Mr. & Mrs. Arthur S. Allen in Providence, Rhode Island, on October 8, 1910. In 1929, she graduated, with honors, from Tefft Business Institute in Providence, and in October 1929, she was employed by the New York Urban League. In December 1929, she began a long and illustrious 46-year career with the National Urban League. On October 31, 1975, she retired as Assistant Director of the National urban League's Skills Bank. Consultant to Hazeltine Corporation 1976 to present.
"While in her job-placement role, Ruthie, as she is fondly called, came into prominence. She was responsible for the recruitment and placement of literally thousands of minority men and women into the corporate world. Very often, Ruthie's placements were the first Black management-level employees of these companies. She was the catalyst for the changing of the complexion of the Executive Office. She has effectively created a cadre of successful, knowledgeable, and confident Black executives in public and private life across America.
"Much of Ruthie's success in this area can be attributed to her professionalism; her warmth; charm; and most famous humor; her uncanny ability to remember the names and faces of all whom she meets; and the sincere interest she takes in the lives of her friends.
"In addition to her interpersonal skills, Ruthie's perception and vision enabled her to foresee the problems inherent in the assimilation of Blacks into the corporate world. Recognizing the need for an organization to address these problems, Ruthie founded THE EDGES GROUP, INC. on June 27, 1969. The purpose of the Group was, and still is, to provide our members with the skills necessary to assist our respective companies, as well as to help other minorities with their executive employment aspirations. The organization, under Ruthie's guidance, grew from an initial membership of 28, to a current membership of over 100.
"In recognition of her many accomplishments, and her commitment to affirmative action and equal opportunity for all Americans, Ruthie has been the recipient of many awards-mong [[among]] them: "Affirmative Action Pioneer"-New York Chapter of Project Equality; "Ann Tanneyhill Award"-The National Urban League; "Woman of the Year"-the Suffolk County Chapter of Jack & Jill of America; "Recognition Award"the Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity Institute of the National Conference of Christians and Jews. She has been cited by former New York State Governor Hugh I. Carey; former Manhattan Borough President, Percy Sutton; the Governor, the Mayor, and the rhode Island State Legislature in her hometown of Providence, rhode Island; and Medgar Evers College "for her commitment to the liberation of human talent and the advancement of equal employment opportunity."
"Ruthie is included in "Who's Who of American Women"; "Who's Who in the World"; "Who's Who in America"; "WHo's Who in Finance & Industry"; and "Who's Who Among Black Americans".

"Ruthie, you have been the glue that has held THE EDGES GROUP to its original charter. All of us who have been touched by your warmth and love would like to say 'Thank You' with this gift. We are inspired by all that you have done; we are awed by all we know you will do; and we love you! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!"
*(Gift: 19-Diamond-encrusted gold heart pendant and chain)
