48th Annual Convention
NATIONAL FUNERAL DIRECTORS
AND MORTICIANS ASSOCIATION
BALTIMORE CONVENTION CENTER
BALTIMORE, MARYLAND
August 1986

Dear Convention Attendee,

It is a pleasure to extend a cordial welcome to you on the occasion of this 48th Annual Convention.
We are living in a troubled world amid apartheid, famine and hunger, racial and professional injustices, unfair tax reforms, poverty and high crime rates. Yet, with faith in God, we survive.
During this tenth anniversary year of the Federal Trade Commission's allegations against funeral directors, the Wall Street Journal has attacked us in the Pre-Need arena. We can combat such criticisms and accusations if we strive for excellence. We must continue to design a plan of excellence for ourselves as individuals, for our firms, our communities and our professional organizations.
"Excellence by Design", for NFDMA, is a shared responsibility. Each member must strive for excellence if we are to achieve it as an organization. We have made progress and, while we must maintain and extend that progress, we must reach beyond ourselves and demonstrate our concern for others.
As we continue the struggle for civil and human rights throughout these United States, we should recognize that other ethnic groups reach out in concern for their brothers and sisters in their mother country. Why shouldn't we? Let us support the sanctions against South Africa. Let us support our own project, USA for Africa. This is a facet of "Excellence by Design."
The design of this convention focuses on achieving excellence. Therefore, we feel this will be the best convention yet - and with your active participation and cooperation, it will be.
Let's "share a dream - make it a reality" as we endeavor to achieve "Excellence by Design."

Love & Peace,
