The Freedmen are beginning to leave the city in search of new homes- quite a number left during the week. Things effecting the Negroes are favorable. They are not exhibiting a spirit, that indicates serious trouble. Yet many of the Citizens seem confident, that during holidays, the freedmen will commit many atrocious deeds. I think all will remain quiet. The enlisted men from 26th Ind Inf. have been relieved from duty in this Office. I received a Special Order from Col Thomas, on last Monday the 18th inst to report to my Command. Consulting my own judgement and that of fellow Officers, I concluded, it was my duty to remain until my successor arrived - as I am responsible for books, desks, papers &c. I have forwarded several despatches and communications asking for information concerning my departure.

I remain very respectfully
