Personally appeared before me Hariett Kilgore (Cold) of the County of Chickasaw State of Mississippi and made oath to the following viz:

My name is Harriett Kilgore, I formerly belonged to Landon Kilgore of the County and State Aforesaid. At the surrender I remained with him and worked for him without any contract as I had always done. On the morning of Dec. 2" 1865 Landon Kilgore asked my why I did not go and make up a fire. I told him I had back ache and was not in any hurry to get up there. He replied he did not care anything about my Damned back and to come out there and he would make it ache. I told him I had done nothing for him to whip me for. He said he had wanted to whip me for some time and that I thought that I was free and would do nothing he told me to, and, that I wanted to do nothing, and told me again to come on. I came out and went with him to the shop. He then told me to strip off all my rags, I took off my clothes. He then told me to lie down and stretch out my hands and if I did not, he would get a rope God Damn me and stretch them for me. I did as he told me when he whipped me with a stake used to hold up the side boards of a waggon Box about two feet long three inches wide and one-half an inch thick striking me on the butt cutting the skin and laming me so
