Raymond December 7, 1865.
Sir
A communication from the Office Freedmen's Bureau, of date December inst was handed me ^[[by]] one of the freedmen, addressed "To all whom it may concern," I presume it was for me and hence I reply:
In the first place it is necessary to obtain an order of court, which sits once a month, say 1st Monday in each month, before an Adm. can effect compromise, of the goods & chattels rights and credits of an Estate. The offer of Compromise made by Mr. C.C. Drew was laid before the Probate Court only yesterday before rect. of your communication, and the prayer of the application of the Adm. was granted, as will fully appear by the enclosed certified copy of the order granted the Petition under the Seal of the court.
It is unqualifiedly false, that I as Adm. of the Estate of John T. Watson ever attempted to sell [[underlined]] all the corn [[/underlined]] on the places of the Estate, but the reverse of the assertion is the truth.
