Please ask the Col. if he intended I should not collect rent from Mr. Clapp. for his residence. Also from Mr. Mason I understood him that I should not collect from Mr. Lucas and the other gentlemen claim the same in their cases. My family are here and I expect them to stay here which is one reason for being careful not to exceed my instructions. My inclinations are to come fully up to them in the cases mentioned. They have been leading secessionists. Such as are known as the "Blue Cockade Chaps" and although they plead poverty very strong it is my opinion that a small rent would not hurt them much. There are some houses here built by a Mr.
