Office Freedmens Bureau Holly Springs Miss. Sept. 12th 1865 Lt. S. D. Barnes A. A. A. Gen. Freedmens Bureau Dist. Northern Miss. Sir Mr. E. P. Hatch, the man I asked you by letter yesterday to detail as clerk is here now. Discharged. Can I hire him as clerk, and what wages can I give him? I should like very much to have him, but if you think the Bureau cannot afford a clerk (citizen) for this Office I would ask that he be employed for the Grenada Office if needed there. I think there are [[underlined]] very [[/underlined]] few if any better clerks than he. He was Chief Clerk at Hd. Qrs. Defences N.O. nearly a year and gave perfect satisfaction Very Respectfully [[signature]] Nelson G. Gill [[/signature]] Capt. and Sub Com. Freedmen
