Winchester

Thursday, March 7, 1918

First morning Winchester - we spent the morning trying to get our bearings. Breakfast had porridge which [[strikethrough]] all [[/strikethrough]] had already been milked & sugared. 

In the afternoon Rucker McElvain Kennedy & I visited Winchester Cathedral It was a real dip into the past.

My! ain't Hinglish girls queer? They certainly seem crude compared with ours. Had af'noon tea in the little old palace of William Conqueror. We were furnished lil sacharine[[saccharine]] tablets to sweeten our tea. Bought 4/- worth of chocolates at Tillings. Gave them to the children of the town one at a time.

Spent Evening reading up guide book of Winchester with Mc.

Friday, March 8, 1918

This morning I had rubber blakies put on my field boots along with McElvain.

This afternoon McElvain Rueker Grant & I went sight seeing. Rode to town for 1/- apiece. Went to WestGate. Saw trap door for portcullis, weights & measures - then after oogling at some girls in a private girls school we went to the Great Hall of the Castle and saw the old seat of Parliment[[Parliament]] and King Arthur's Roundtable Had tea at the Norman Tea House with Grant.

Major Harting returned in the evening with lots to tell us and a Guarantee Trust Co check for $34 3.11. 

The pilots of the squadron will be scattered all over England for training. Mailed three picture p-cards to the States.
