Some of the boys go to London this morning. Lt. Pruden and I oil up our Sam Brownes with 3 in 1. We spilt some oil on Doc Arnold's chair which caused him much wrath and he spilt some language around.

Walked thru the grounds of Winchester College this p.m. saw some kids playing Soccer The Choristes [[Choristers]] and St. Swithurn's [[Swithun's]] were battling for supremacy. The mottoe of the Institution is "Manners maketh the Man" [[Manners makyth man]] Saw a board with names of about 20 old Wintonians who had passed thru a certain town in France and put their names there since war began.

Arose late and took things easy all morning. Menue as usual. Lovely warm spring day.

In the pip emma several of us went down along the river bottoms to St. Cross church. At one place the river bed of one branch of the stream ran over another branch of it. A great promenade for Winchester swains & lassies since Alfred the Great's time. We passed many worthy students wandering around the fields & greens. They were Winchester College men - and wore sophistication in every motion and stovepipes on every top-not.

Transcription Notes:
pip emma meant p.m. in Britain in the military slang of the day.
