Saturday, April 20, 1918

Up early in morning for cross country. Ground mist very thick. Hill & Owens take off disappear at 50 ft and make forced landings down near Issoudun. 

Flying washed out so Traps is only amusement 

Hear at dinner that Marquardt is killed Came out of the mist right into a tree on the "18" field. The fusilage broke and he fell out. Crushed skull and injuries to hip & punctured lung from which he died The first of the 27. 

Am confined to camp for a month for missing a class.

Sunday, April 21, 1918

Nice day but no flying. Hear that Norton, Schmitt, Elliott, and Wanamaker are going to Paris to get trucks etc. 

All R.F.C. men are at main camp for Funeral service for Marquardt. Fellows come in from both Field 7 & Field 5. 139th and 27th march together

Our mechanics are leaving tomorrow so they were not present. Major Augstrum was present. 

Sewars comes back from cross country. He went to Tours, Tournon, Le Blanc. Bourges and away beyond Orleans. 

Nothing said as he got back all right Williams crashed cranking his buss.
