I got up at 04:30 and after getting dressed in the dark I had breakfast. The convoy pulled out at 0600 sharp. It was cold but otherwise I had a swell trip. We stopped just twice in 350 miles. We traveled on the Route [[?]] till we came to N.Y. then we struggled a no. of highways till we came to Bangor. We arrived at the main gait at approximately 1710. What a cheer the boys gave when we came through the gate. But when we got to the barracks we heard that Japan attacked the Hawaiian Islands and that they declared war on the U.S. What a shock and a welcome. I then had supper saw Gus and then went to bed about 2100. Slept on a good spring bunk what a relief.
