Up at 0615A. Cleaned up. We left the convoy about six o'clock. And now we are only three ships. Two freighters and a destroyer. One of the 50 turned over by the U.S. last year. As far as I can find out we are going to Gander Field a ferry command base. Just what I hoped for. We sighted land about 0930A. Newfoundland at last. I'll be glad to get off of this dam boat. We dock at St. John's. Got off the boat at 1530A. Boarded buses and rode out to Fort Pepperrell where we stayed for the night. The harbor at St. John's is beautiful but the city is a crummy old hole. Here all cars are driven English style on the wrong or left side of the road. The country is beautiful small mountains of solid rock and rugged as you can imagine. Ft. Pepperrell is between two large mts. It is new so under construction but a perminent Ft. The barracks are wonderful all solid cement and finished as good as any milionaire [[millionaire]] home. Oil heat. Met two fellows from the Eng. and after supper went to the show. After I took a shower and went to bed. About 2330A. I was really tired.
