Up at 0700A. During the day I worked at the lab getting paper from the A. C. Supply. Also got some 4x5 Kodachrome. Just before I left for supper Stengson called me and said I was to be an honor guard for Col. Witaker who was killed in a sea plane crash at Botwood last Sunday. I then called Margret and canceled my date but at the same time I made a date for Saturday evening. I then drew a rifel [[rifle]] & belt from the supply. We met at the orderly room but the train was late so we went to the show "True to the Army," Fair. Still no Nefie Express so we went to bed. Got up at 2400A but it was a false alarm. Were awake again at 0230A but another false alarm. Finally we got a call at 0330A and we rode down to the R.R. where the Newfie Speeder bought four bodies to be buried at the Gander cemetery. One was Col. Witaker. The caskets were just plain oak and sealed.

Transcription Notes:
The train in Newfoundland, affectionately known as the Newfie Bullet, but which he calls Nefie Express and Newfie Speeder, was notoriously slow and late. Needless to say, the terms speeder and express are terms of sarcastic humour.
