  reach Fligely this fall, that we may have one try for the Pole & make sure of getting back next year.  I would sooner lose an arm than stay up here two years - & yet we must have a success before returning.

  If I do stay two years - which is unlikely - borrow money on life insurance; finance the thing some way; beg money from everybody.  You can get it.  I did.  People who have money can be worked if you go at them in the right way.  Promise to pay in my name, & I will make it good.  I rely upon you to see that my dear wife & girls are protected - & I know I do not hope in vain.  This is my last Arctic trip.  Fail or win I promise this upon my honor.

WELLMAN POLAR EXPEDITION.

My very dear brother:  Well, here we are at the beginning of our hard campaign & I am pressed for time, as the ship is to leave in a few hours, and I have very much to do.  I enclose copy of a letter which I wrote to Laura, & I hope you can pick it out, though there are many abbreviations in it.  I also hope Laura will write you some particulars, as she has a copy of my journal to date.

  We have made a rather lucky voyage so far.  I did have hopes we could get the ship farther
