June 4th 1909 Friday Left Tromso at 5.30 A.M motor worked well for several hours then refused and a calm prevailed so we stood still for several hours not any wind at all, snow white - peaks above the clouds make a very interesting & pretty sight. 5 P.M. have not made 1/2 mi in hours dead calm. Working on motor. About 30 mi from Tromso by 12 night Calm at 12 night. Fixed motor. Saturday June 5th, Engineer a wooden shoed, no experience Engine not working, a dead calm not a mile in hours, not in ocean yet 10 AM have our men on attention. Saw first whale, about 20 feet long, 11 AM. a good breeze for 1/2 hour only. about 8 or 10 mi in 24 hours. Caught a good breeze at 12 noon Motor useless,
