ARTHUR WELLMAN WRITES OF FAMOUS BROTHER

Arthur Wellman writes from St. Petersburg, Florida a brief message of interest concerning his brother, the last Walter Wellman. Mr. and Mrs. Wellman, who live in Madison, Wisconsin, are spending a short time in the south to escape the rigors of the Wisconsin winter. Before returning to their home they will visit their daughter Lulu at Laurel, Mississippi.

Walter Wellman came to York county with his parents in 1871, according to the data provided by his brother. The pioneer home was established about ten miles southwest of York in Henderson township. There were four sons in the family, of whom Walter was the youngest. Mr. and Mrs. Wellman senior were residents of the county during the remainder of their lives.

Walter entered the office of the York Monitor in 1872 to learn the printer's trade and at the age of fifteen started the Sutton Times and continued its publication for several years. He was joined by his brother Frank who afterwards moved the plant to York and published the York Tribune. Afterwards the two brothers published a daily paper in Canton, Ohio. Walter was employed as a writer on the Chicago Tribune for a time and was for many years Washington correspondent for the Chicago Record Herald.

"Walter's activities in the Arctic are well known," writes his brother, "and he was the first man to attempt to reach the North Pole by air."
