Nearly Third of Derby Flyers Women; 'Thrills' at Clover Field Will Precede Start

  More than fifty flyers, nearly a third of them women, will take off from Clover field this afternoon in a second Santa Monica-to-Cleveland cross-country race. 
 The derby will consume eight days, contestants being scheduled to reach Cleveland next Sunday, August 20, the second day of the National Air Races. 
  The route to be followed is: Calexico, 196 miles, overnight stop; Phoenix, 206 miles, noon; Tucson, 106 miles, overnight; Douglas, 103 miles, noon; El Paso, 183 miles, overnight; Roswell, 160 miles, noon; Amarillo, 198 miles, overnight; Enid, 235 miles, noon; Bartlesville, 108 miles, overnight; Jefferson City, 244 miles, noon; East St. Louis, 110 miles, overnight; Terre Haute, 159 miles, noon; Dayton, 173 miles, overnight; Akron, 167 miles, noon, and Cleveland, 30 miles.

  It is planned to send the planes away at one minute intervals, starting at 2:31 p.m.
  Preceding the beginning of the cross-country race itself, exhibition flying, Army air maneuvers by two formations from March Field, acrobatic flying by Col. John Hinchey and Les Bowman and other events will be presented to entertain spectators.
  Arrangements have been made at Clover Field to accommodate huge crowds, grandstands having been erected and the field equipped with a public address system. The Santa Monica Junior Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the start of the race in conjunction with National Air Race Association officials and representatives of the National Aeronautical Association.
