'LOS ANGELES NESTLING IN VALLEY' - 1873
[[image]]
A San Francisco photographer who made the above picture of Los Angeles in 1873 describes the city in a line thus: "Los Angeles gives its name to the valley in which it is located, and where it occupies a charming location, nestling among orange groves and vineyards." The Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce was founded in this year, but closed its doors shortly after, an unsuccessful venture. It did succeed in getting the Government to appropriate $150,000 for San Pedro Harbor.

OLD-TIME PICTURES OF LOS ANGELES - 1882

The City Hall and jail were housed in one small structure shown above in 1882. The jail entrance is on the right. Note the barred window. A small flurry of excitement ran through Los Angeles in 1882, when this photo was taken. A miner, panning gold on Olive street near Fifth street, panned a large nugget.

PERSHING SQUARE, A PASTORAL SCENE - 1882
[[image]]
Central Park, now Pershing Square, presented quite a pastoral scene in 1882, when the above photo was taken. Although the city owned 99 per cent of the town's acreage, Pershing Square was the only Down Town tract kept for park purposes. The corner in the foreground is Fifth and Olive streets, where now stands the Philharmonic Auditorium and the Biltmore Hotel.

OLD-TIME PICTURES OF L.A. - 1882

When Los Angeles County was organized in 1850 officials of the new empire, which embraced all of San Bernardino and Orange Counties and part of Riverside and Kern Counties - a territory nearly as, large as Ohio - moved into the above structure. The "massive" two-story edifice had been built by Don Juan Temple and is exactly on the site of the new City Hall.

Tennis became the rage in Los Angeles society in the late 90's as the above photo quaintly illustrates. This group of four were among the early enthusiasts. They soon after, in 1900, founded the Los Angeles Tennis Club, famed throughout the nation today. Tennis enthusiasts- Los Angeles, 1890.

BEAUTIES OF LA FIESTA IN 1901
[[image]]
Touring about the city, the features of the parade, the Misses Herron and Clark won first prize in La Fiesta de Los Angeles in 1901. This was the year the first automobiles were employed in the fiesta and they created a great deal of excitement. Here we see their flower-decked float as the young women drove through the city. Fashions in those days seem strange to us today - but they were characteristic of the times and customs.

WHEN LOS ANGELES WAS A SETTLEMENT - 1859
[[image]]
A group of one-story buildings met the eye here in 1859. The settlement was still largely Spanish and consisted of a few more than 2000 souls. A bill went to Legislature the same year making Southern California "the territory of Colorado." How close the state was to division may be gleaned from Buchanan's statement: "... In short, the union of Southern and Northern California is unnatural." (These photos are appearing through the courtesy of the Security-First National Bank.)

SANTA MONICA BEACH SCENE - 1872
[[image]]
Here is "Ocean Beach" (Santa Monica) in the seventies. The illustration is a sketch taken from the best book written about Los Angeles at that time. Strangely enough, the tome was penned by a German and published in Prague. Note the fashionable(?)beach attire of children, women and their escorts. (These photos are appearing in the Express through the courtesy of Security-First National Bank.)
