TEMPLE STREET FROM BUNKER HILL-1881

Looking west on Temple street from Bunker Hill in 1881, a visitor to Los Angeles would have witnessed the above scene. Past the homes in the foreground stretched a huge rancho. In 1881 the 100th anniversary of the founding of Los Angeles was celebrated with a fiesta. Even then 12,000 persons thronged the town. Now the city is to celebrate the 150th anniversary a half century later.

SOUTH HILL STREET IN 1886

Looking south on Hill street from above First street, one might have seen this view of Los Angeles in 1886. At that time church spires constituted the skyline. The same year the photo was taken the Southern Pacific and Santa Fe Railroads had a rate war and for one day you could have traveled to Missouri and back for $1.

FIRST GOLF COURSE IN LOS ANGELES - 1897
[[image]]
"Fore," as the battle cry of golf in Los Angeles was first heard in 1897 when 10 men sank a few tomato cans on the vacant property near Pico and Alvarado streets and purchased clubs and fancy golf "uniforms." This picture was taken on the old Los Angeles Country Club links at Pico and Western. Joseph Sartori and Ed Tufts, golfing "daddy" of Southern California, built the course.

LOS ANGELES' FIRST THEATER
[[image]]
On Main street, near First street, in 1884, was erected the first pretentious theater in Los Angeles - Childs' Grand Opera House. In reporting the opening the souvenir program states that for "obvious reasons the theater cannot be electrically lighted." Edwin Booth, Modjeska and other stars appeared in the opera house. Adalina Patti, unable to engage the theater, sang in a market across the street. The theater is still standing.

WHEN L.A. WAS A FRONTIER TOWN
[[image]]
Los Angeles was said to have been the toughest frontier town in America from 1850 to 1871. In the latter year the climax came when 18 innocent Chinese were massacred by a mob of 500 men. According to records, there were 40 legal hangings and 37 "impromptu" affairs such as the one pictured above. This photo was taken on the present site of the Federal Building, just prior to one of the hangings.
