New York 22, New York

April 18, 1959

Dear Jack:

Bravo and a thousand congratulations are certainly in order, and what a splendid assignment with such great possibilities.

Do you remember that when we broached the subject at home a few weeks ago, not only did you seem completely aloof and uninterested - you were, in fact, what the French call a "cachottier", no translation in English I think - but you added that an army man should be appointed for this job...As you are wearing no uniform, will you just be "speaking softly and carry a big stick"...

However, whatever the difficulties might be, I am certain that you will be able to face them, and though selfishly I am sorry that you should be going so far from New York, I feel very happy for your own sake.

With all good wishes,

Cordially yours,

Germain Seligman
