Dear Tony:

It was pleasant indeed to receive your little note of January 1st and to hear how optimistic you are as to the research you intended to undertake in respect to the two coats of arms on my Italian marble high-relief.

However, as I wrote to you at the time, I realise that you have other work to do - and a great deal more interesting indeed. Therefore, I would consider it an imposition to count upon you wasting so much of your time on this particular topic. I was hoping that you would know of some young man whom you could brief or direct as to where and how he should proceed to obtain results.

Be this as it may, let me say again how much I appreciate the interest you are taking in this matter. In fact, having been over to Europe for a short visit, I dropped in on Mr. Pope-Hennessy - who by the way told me that he had had the pleasure of seeing you in Rome - and who agrees with me as to the value of deciphering these two arms. We know so little about the Master of the Marble Madonnas that, by identifying these, it would no doubt bring us closer to him.

Let me repeat also that it is my intention of remunerating whoever will undertake this research - this just to enable you to secure whatever help you might find necessary.

Meanwhile, with kindest regards,

Sincerely yours,

Germain Seligman
