I started working with wood, painted sculptures about ten years ago. The idea came to me from walking on the beach in front of my studio in Southold, Long Island.
I'm only interested in carpenters' throw-aways. Due to so much building, there's a great deal thrown up on the beaches of all sizes and shapes. I take them up to my studio and paint them. Then I put them arround me and assemble them, after which I nail them together.
I try not to be in any way cliche or influenced by images of the past. The content of the work derives from humor, rhythm, and poetry.
