I have the honor to petition you for the restoration of a peice of land held by the "Freedmen" Bureau" I here with hand you the certificate of the C. Clerk Mr. James [[Ramsley? Rumby?]] - which will explain my right &c. I was going to school at Chapel Hill N.C. when the "conscript act." was passed - and "Volunteered" in Co. B 5th Regt. N.C. Cav. at Goldsboro N.C. June 27th 1862 to avoid conscription. I was taken Prisoner June 3d, 1864 and released from "Camp for Prisoners of War Elmira N.Y. May 6th 1865 on subscribing to the oath as prescribed in the Presidents Proclamation of Dec. 8th 1863.

I herewith hand you the oath; This is all the land I own, and most respectfully petition its restoration at your earliest convenience.
