The Petition of Jasper Stowe of Lincoln County North Carolina respectfully showeth that he is tenant for life of 1/4 of each of the lots 74 & 76 in the town of Beaufort, on the north side of Ann Street, with the houses and other improvements thereon, now under the control of the Freedmans Bureau. The Petition further showeth that the premises and the property of his late wife, who has lately died having left issue by him, and he became tenant by the Courtesy of the premises. Both his petitioner and his late wife won at the beginning of the war, audits of the County of Lincoln, and not of the County of Carteret, so that they did not abandoned this property. A copy of petitioner pardon is herewith submitted together with a copy of the Amnesty oath subscribed by petitioner. The petitioner jointly with his wife made an application for the premises dated Nov 25th 1865 but it was returned with an endorsement dated Office [[?]] Agent N.C. Newbern Dec 8th 1865 requiring evidence that parties are not [[?]] within the 4 captions of Presidents Amnesty Proclamation. As his Excellencys pardon is enclosed it is hoped that an order will be made for the restoration of this property.

Personally appeared before me Richard Dillon Capt. V.R.C. & Asst. Supt. Bu.R.F. & A.L. for the Sub Dist Beaufort N.C. Antony Simmons Freedman who after being duly sworn deposed and saith that on the 7th day of July 1866, he purchased one mule & one horse of Capt Barlow Agnes at Morehead City N.C. and that he let Daniel [(?)]Perry of Jones County N.C. have the use of mule & horse for their keep or as the expression was for little or nothing, and the said Perry agreed to let Linc [?] Simmons have them at any time, he sent for them. On or about the 12th Dec 1865, he Simmons sent for the mule and horse, to said Perry. The horse was to arrive on the 15th. Dec. 1865. But the man Perry stated he sold. This sale of the mule was without the authority of Simmons.
