   Upper Marlboro 16" Mch 1868
A.K. Brown Esqr.
Dr Sir C.L. Bowie came to see me
to-day + I have effected a settlement with him of Geo Jackson's claim on the basis of Bowie's Mem D/" or due Bill for $59.30 d/ And Bowie has pledged himself to pay said claim sometime during the month of April next or at farthest the month after. Bowie had a large account in bar reducing his actual indebtedness to Jackson to only $39. which I of course refused to allow- I think the agreement made with him for a settlement is the very best that could be made especially as I think there is no doubt of my getting the money within the time slated
          Very Resp'y
            Yor obt. svt.
          (signed) Shelby Clark
P.S. Should Jackson be in want I think there could be no risk now in the Department advancing him a little money from time to time to help him along on the faith of this claim being realized within the time stated.
