[[underlined]] Respectfully returned [[/underlined]] to [[underlined]] Lieut W. W. Rogers A. A. A. Genl. U.S.A. [[/underlined]] It appears from records on file in this office that [[underlined]] James Henry [[/underlined]] ^[[insertion]] (Cold) [[/insertion]] the writer of the within communication was admitted to the "Home" on application of Mr L Watson A. S. Sanitary Commission to Maj Genl. [[underlined]] O. O. Howard [[/underlined]] August 25th 1866 - to be provided for, for a few weeks until his pension papers were received:

"On March 12th 1867 [[underlined]] P. P. Bergevise [[/underlined]] Asst Supt. referred the Above Mentioned communication to Brig Genl. C H Howard Asst Comr. with the information that the within mentioned James Henry (Cold) was then receiving a pension of $8.00 per Month and since his admission to the "Home" had created a great deal of trouble, submitting the Case to the Asst Commissioner for information: Said communication was returned to Lieut B. for further remarks - and for information whether this man (Henry) with the Assistance of his pension could support himself.

Lieutenant Bergioin[[guess]] then referred the case to Surgeon [[underlined]] G. A. Wheeler [[/underlined]] the Surgeon in charge who returned the communication to L. B.

with the information that the within mentioned James Henry (Cold) was in his opinion able to support himself without any pension - and he (Henry) admitted that he could ^[[insertion]] do [[/insertion]] so with it and stated that he (H) had been entered on his list for discharge from the "Home" - - - 

Lieut Bergarris[[guess]] then forwarded the communication to Asst. Comr - which was returned, with the indorsement that the Man Henry would not be retained at the "Home", if able to work and maintain himself; that if no employment could be obtained here he could be sent North."

I discharged him from the "Home" on or about the 25th of March, since which time he has been attending sc^[[insertion]] h [[/insertion]] ool and refused to go away at all, and is still here. I placed him in the guard house for impudence and abusive language to me.

I confined Lewis Gaskins in the guard house on Sunday last for threatening Mr Vagden with violence - The following is his statement - - "I came to the Lieut (B) on Friday last to get a string to lace my artificial limb with, he gave me an order for the same on the Matron - I went to the shoe shop with the order, gave it to the Matron and was told by her to come at 8 oclock the next morning; I went at the appointed time; the Matron was not in; saw Mr Vagden (Shoe Maker) asked him, where is Mrs Stull - he said she is not in there is no string done, he (Vagden) said go out

I said Mrs Stull promised to give me some patches - he said go out, I said I wanted to get some patches to mend my drawers with

[[underlined]] Mrs Betsey Jackson [[/underlined]] working in the sewing room made the following statement - - I work in the serving room. Saw Gaskins come in, Mrs. Stull was not in. Vagden asked Gaskins what he came in for, he said for a string to lace my leg with and some patches to mend my drawers with; Vagden ordered him out; Gaskins said he was waiting for Mrs Stull to come, Vagden said he would send for the guard & put him out the Guard came and put him out - - [[underlined]] Mrs Mary Book[[guess]] [[/underlined]] - Also working in the sewing room made the following statement - Gaskins came in said he wanted some patches to mend his drawers and some thread, Vagden ordered him out; he said he wanted to see Mrs Stull, - Vagden went out very quick and the Guard came & took Gaskins out - Each (V & G) threatened the other with violence.
