as a safety measure. However it was in fact to better distribute our weight. 5 passengers USARP and 4 Navy men & crew replaced [[greater than or equal to sign]] 1500 lbs to the tail section and we took off. [[margin]] [[arrow]] [[/margin]] After 40 minutes' flight to Williams Field on the barrier beyond Scott Base we landed smoothly. Carried out all our hand luggage (my camera and 2 large, heavy canvas bags) and stood around waiting. Finally someone waved us off telling us we were on our own to go to the tractor truck (creepy-crawly) near the buildings. Off we slushed and struggled -- loaded in & began a slow, grinding ride to Scott Base. Tires 18" wide & huge were almost inadequate to get us over the large pressure waves in the ice near shore. Once on land we floundered in mud. Stopped at Scott Base to change buses -- to an old work truck. About 5:45 we arrived at McM w. no place to go. No rooms - no directions. Dean showed me a bunk room in the hotel & I left my bags there -- he went to sleep but I was not sleepy. Took breakfast at 6:00 before fresh fruits were out but those came before I finished. Went back to Inn & had a bath (but no shampoo) after pulling clean clothes out of my bags in bunk room. Then to Berg ctr to look for my address book. It was not there! Thence to chalet to ask for a room, it then being nearly 9:00.[[Zubbouf]], after some confusion, put me back in #206 w. Bobby Segal. Great! Back home again I discovered my address book on the floor under the heating pipes! Prepared my mail & took it to P.O. Bought more envelopes and post cards -- got our S-058 cachet from Shiraishi & stamped envelopes. Bought T-shirt, lotion and goodies at store
