Sunday Dec. 31
Slept late
PM walked to Hut Point & saw the old Scott site and paraphernalia. It had just been opened, as I arrived,
by the Chaplain a New Zealander who acts as curator. He is immensely respectful of the exhibits and commented that so must I be if I am from the Smithsonian. I enjoyed it much: the old stoves, cans, seal blubber, biscuit tins, however, lamps etc, are as left many years ago. I tried borrowing flash for photo from [[??]] but failed to go off -- just as it had for Tom back home.

Walked to hilltop w Cross & saw large Weddell seals on ice below.
Two people walked out to them only to be bailed back by NSF man in truck (they were visible from chalet.). Walking back took pictures of MCM then noticed people on ice beside MCM [[?]] with an Adelie penguin! I hurried over there, joined by 2 more from hut party, & found penguin - took about 15 photos. It was a great thrill. Ice is beginning to break and seals & penguins coming in. However later I learned that a helo pilot brought the penguin to McM.

In biol. library discovered [[??]] Baldwin back from J9 & nearly ready to go home. New Year [[strikethrough]] Eve [[/strikethrough]] Eve party described (out of sequence) on next page.
