Jan. 6 Wind strong all night but little snow blowing. Bill called me at 10:30AM. We expect a helo about 2:15 w a mechanic & snowmobile. Dean to go back to McM to see Doctor -- cold worse. I wrenched back leaving tent after brunch. A miserable mishap. I thought my back was strong when it easily endured miles of jouncing in a snowmobile. Weather clouded in but helo arrived about 4:30 w snowmobile & mechanic who tinkered a moment w our big one in camp & said it is OK. (!). They took Dean & the ice sampler for Jim Arnold and some garbage & left immediately. No time or weather for recon or for fixing the Skidoo in the field. Bill & Suraishi went on 2 snowmobiles at 5:45 to examine Bill's ablation experiment. I am in camp in [[?? ??]] on my back planning to get supper. Suraishi has given me a chemical pad to use tonight. I didnt try hard enough to get them back home. Directions are in Japanese. Helo brought 2 letters from Tom, one from [[strikethrough]] secretaries [[/strikethrough]] students at ASU & copy of my telegram to him. After helo left Bill & Suraishi went into field to examine Bill's year-old ablation experiment - There has been none. I stayed home w. bad back & got supper : boned chicken & mushrooms - noodles. B. [[??]].

The chemical pad worked rather well & brought my back close to recovery.
