Jan. 9

Today we did some geology -- not meteorites. Drove toward the N. end of Allan Hills & looked thru a pan to a rocky valley & blue ice slope; an area promising in petrified wood, ventifacts, and, farther on, glossopteris flora.

Soon after we started on to look for glossopteris for Suraishi & I. Bill's mobile began to give out. In the end he left us there & limped back to camp. Suraishi & I had a glorious day. Could not get to glossopteris [[?]] because of crevasses en route. Went to valley over pan w cool [[?]] and pet. wood. Collected, took pictures, drank tea. The ride home was thrilling: Snowmobile racing over the ice thru glorious scenery, the late sun, not cold, the blue sky. I fantasized about racing a Yamaha (the only kind that stays the course) in an event back home; a blue & white mobile called The Blue Ice ridden w style & spirit. We had a long, fast, free ride to camp & found Bill inventorying food supplies. Most unopened things will be left in a cache for Annexstad & Nishio next yr when they come back to check their ice-motion grid. The plan now is for helos to evacuate most of the equipment tomorrow & the people on the 11th. Bill will try to go tomorrow though because he wants to lv. for Christchurch on the 12th. I volunteered to leave last: I so love it here. Bill says it's a great pleasure to be out here w someone who enjoys it so much.
