Jan 10 Early radio message: No helos today; McMurdo socked in! Bill told me this about 9:30 & then advised me to sleep longer; he was going back to bed. I stayed until ~11:30 then got up, out, & went for a walk; South toward the pole. it is so beautiful here. I went down on ice slope toward the Mt. wall & realized how easily I could slip & nail down - downward out of sight. Came back to plateau within sight of camp. It was a great hike & I stayed out until I saw stirring in camp. Bill & Shiraishi slept until nearly 2 PM.
Then lunch & out & to a great ice wave near Mt. Bill & I had to share a skidoo & I even dumped him off to the back once on the way. We rode down a steep slope & into a valley penetrated by moraines. We looked for meteorites, of course, but the purpose was the scenery & some zeolite-bearing rods. In the valley the sun was melting pools around the huge boulder & indeed around any pebble. There were little pools of standing water. The scene below the ice wall stunning: took lots of pictures. Meanwhile Shiraishi drove up to the rim of the wall & off ocean the plateau -- stayed a long time. When we decided to leave for camp we could see him on the rim again & tried to flash him w a mirror. Bill drove home & I rode on rear. Made it without motor dying once. In evening packed up equipment: stands [?] Dean's tent. After dinner discussed Nature of Science & Uniformitarianism. Bill advised me to write a book about that but he has yet to read the book I did write.
