The Early Birds is an organization of pilots who flew solo in aircraft prior to December 17, 1916 (13th anniversary of the Wright Brothers' famous first powered flight). The plaque being presented lists the names of members of the organization, both living and deceased, including many renowned pioneers of flight.

The Pionieri dell' Aeronautica is a similar organization of Italian pilots. The sculptures being presented are busts of the first military pilots of Italy. They were taught to fly by Wilbur Wright in 1909. Both became noted pilots, instructors, and designers of aircraft.

The date of this presentation, April 16, marks the birth date of Wilbur Wright, born in 1867 near Millville, Indiana.
