After awhile we had been sprayed [[?]] still sat quietly. Then they announced we could leave. The crowd going thru entry gate w landing passes was huge, slow.

At the 1st counter I passed in 4 seconds; at second counter I was asked if I had a continuing ticket. I announced I was heading for Antarctica; showed travel orders (Naval) but said I worked, not for Navy but Smithsonian; that confused the officer sufficiently to send him off to check on things. He came back to say that if I was traveling under Navy orders, then I was with the Navy -- so to speak. Having cleared me, he cleared Bob at sight of his papers. Crossed out our need to go thru customs & sent us out the exit. Ghislaine, being Belgian, took a bit longer.

Collected baggage, found carts - went to bus stop to transfer to Domestic ^[[Terminal]] Air N. Zealand -> Christchurch.

I sat nr. the front w a very friendly young man who asked if I was coming home. No, I replied, I'm just coming in. Where to? I'm going out to Antarctica for 2 months. Are you a scientist? Yes. etc... He said geology was his favourite subject. Is a civil engineer, a straight C-Man all through, but he got A+ in geology. Lives at tip of S Is. as close to Antarctica as one can get. Is working for a company & combines being a capitalist with scientific projects

Bus fare 80 [[cents symbol]] (U.S. ok). When we landed, he urged me to quick grab a cart around the corner. When I looked around corner, no carts left but a man was coming w. one he offered to me.

Transfer made easily. This time we all asked for window seats.

Bought stamps. Loaded camera, tried flash.
