Rules are rules, of course. And we packed w. great care so that our orange carry-on bags would fit in a box under our seats. But I am at the far end of the raw and my bag is beside me - as are those of my neighbors across the plane. V. convenient. Can get camera in & out. Lunched ~ 11:40 dozed quite a bit. Earplugs dim the roar but the vibration is mesmerizing.

~ 2:20 We began to explore the possibilities of the view from the Cabin. Bob went up 1st. Then Ghislaine, when I got there we were approaching the continent. Ice w gray patches - then distant mts. Then close Bluffs. We may have flown in over Cape Adare. Took a few record shots on 200 film. Then, bak at the porthole could see mts & glaciers below at 2:45 we have ~ 1 hr of flight time left.

[[underlined]] Landed ~4. [[/underlined]] at different runway than before. This one was out toward edge of ice shelf. We caught sight of Mt. Erebus from distance. It looked like a little mound w. a long plume of dark (!) smoke. But as we taxied into McM in a truck Erebus was to our right. Glistening white and with a plume, long & trailing, of white steam. Clear, windless day - puffy clouds. The whole range was glistening from Terror to Erebus (the route of the Penguin egg hunters).

Drove to chalet for briefing session. Heard about the garage fire -- loss of machine shop -- the wounded [[??]], a McM water shortage...we line up for 1 shower in 10 days...Moved into room 108 - 1st floor next to door facing chalet. Not under 208 which I occupied twice w. Bobby Siegal last time. Room extremely hot; heat on, sun shining in window open - no functioning controls on heater. Window on stairway wedged open. (Energy Conservation). Room has only 1 locker and 1 chair; no table: not good. It might be OK to rough-it except that ^[[some]] other rooms have 2 lockers & 2 tables.

We settled in as best we could but waited until ~ 5:40 before our "Hold" bags appeared on the porch of the chalet. We picked that up and then went to dinner. But not until Bob had learned the ropes of how to buy liquor (where & when), and he and Ghislaine had had beer in the MMI lounge.

Dinner a smaller operation than I remembered. No cafeteria trays, paper plates, small plastic forks, knives, spoons, paper cups. Choice of 2 entrees. But plenty. Back in room we unpacked the rest of our luggage & talked until ~ 8:30 when we met Bob in officer's club. I discovered the pleasure of a cup of white wine on-the-rocks. We left early and still talked until ~ 10:30. Pinned our curtains together, used face masks & ~slept until 6 - woke once or twice but never enough to climb down & go out. Room 108 on 1st floor; women's bathroom = 2nd floor. The room assigner apologized and will change us when possible.
