strong. ^[[Could not even glimpse Mt. Erebus or Terror.]] Cold air on face breathtaking. But not really too much. I began to like the activity and the wind, especially after a day like yesterday of just sitting. We turned toward the ice too soon & had to retrace our steps; passed the cosmic ray lab. Ghislaine stopped to take a picture. I hurried on -- it getting to be 9:40. As I finally made it to the Base, she appeared from nowhere --having taken a short cut.

Two men were waiting for us in the Mess. We introduced ourselves and they offered coffee. I asked if they knew why we were going to Granite H. and they said "No." Nor did they know they were going to Cape Evans today or to G. H. Tuesday. (They thought it might be Cape Royds). We broght news. I began at the beginning, showed my color picture & glossies, & my permissions. They were very agreeable to our joint mission. They believe we have to land on wet ice and wade ashore. I am astonished. I doubt if Turner & Zeller & Dreschoff did that. In any case, they will be carrying a radio, 3 day's food supply for 4, a stove, fuel, tent, & a 15 m rope. We will bring survival kits, ice ages, Lunch, & dry clothing.

After ^[[AM]] tea [[strikethrough]] and [[/strikethrough]] (when the room filled up) we asked the cook if we could stay for lunch (OK).

We went to the Post Office, the dormitory & rec. room, and awaited lunch & the opening of the store. Gh. made arr. w. Donna to call Bob collect next monday. Bought an Antarctic passport and 5 postcards w stamps: Mailed to Tom, Karen, Liprelintz.

Lunch was meat-stuffed turnovers, mashed potatoe, peas & carrots, gravy, soup, toast etc etc. Washed our own dishes. In the shop I bought a silly plastic penguin and some expensive Nivea cream. As we left the Base, a young man showed us two Husky pups. We picked them up & took pictures of each other, but they were too big to handle.

Stopped at the cosmic ray station: Merrifield not in. Armchairs on porch. A huge room full of detectors. We met driver on the road closer to McM. Earlier a Kiwi had joined us on our walk. He works in the kitchen at McM, clears up. Gets excellent pay by a N.Z. scale. Goes to all the scientific lectures.

Back home in our room. Gh. checked to see if John & Ludolf are in. They are not; the weather is too bad at Allan Hills. Helos are flying tho, today for the first time since we arrived.

As we sat, a woman came in w. 2 keys to Room 210 & said we could move. We have a very noisy front entrance right beside our door in 108 and noisy helos outside.

We changed and finished only about 4:50.
