She told me what a difficult job they had had chopping big blocks of ice from a meter down in the crevass walls. Said she worried about Bill working so hard--she thought John & Bob should have done that job. When they came by she greeted new young blood as helpers, but John smiled & said, "We're surveying." and off they went. Didn't lift a finger to help.

I can see, of course, & I suppose I knew all day that they did what they did partly to spare me--in a kindly meant way-- & on the theory that the more effective person should do a job. Gh is younger & stronger - no question. They meant no offense. They don't really count me out. I feel better, but the resentment is still there. Let [[underline]] anybody [[/underline]] try that again. [[strikethrough]] 10:20 [[/strikethrough]]

We had a pleasant dinner. I made a tuna fish dish with 1/2 can of mushrooms, lots of chhili sauce, & melted cheese; all ladled out on bread. Plus Brussel's sprouts. - excellent. We melted ice afterward & its now 10:20.

[[underline]] Thursday, January 14 [[/underline]]

A bright day with gorgeous cloud formations & a light, persistent wind. Bill, John, Bob & I started out ~ 9:40 to survey in the meteorite flags on the near blue ice plateau. Half way up the initial slope along a brown seam indicating a thrust sheet line, I found a meteorite. The others were way ahead--out of sight, in fact. I had no good way of working it, so started on up. Soon I caught sight of Bill checking back on me. I waved the meteorite wave. Shortly all four riders converged and decided to go back and collect. I described it as lying near the seam and soon we had found it. Small, 1/2 covered with fusion crust. Still, the first meteorite of the morning.

We went on up the slab into a cold wind. John would set up a station at one flag & send each of us out to measure the distance to another flag, wait until he had a sighting on us, and then bring in the flag. they day was beautiful & I took many pictures. The surveying took all a.m. & even lasted until after lunch. I got a little chilly -- a rare event. Bob got really chilly -- even w. bearpaw mittens.
