I called the Holiday Inn - no vacancies. Howard Johnson gave me a room -- I couldn't hear the price. Wheeled over to baggage conveyor & a young man took off my 3 bags for me (one ^[[hard tote]] checked in Honolulu). I sat sat sat -- & so did the other woman in a wheel char surrounded by her family. Feeling abandoned, I finally hailed a porter. He said he would take care of me. I called for HoJo's courtesy car & then the porter put me & my bags on the curb. He would retrieve the chair. It was cold in L.A. My Irish sweater was barely enough. In 10 minutes the car picked me up. Not a comfortable room, but reeking in stale smoke in all the upholstery. My final problem was what plane to take from L.A. to Boston. Cassidy had [[end page]] [[start page]] purchased a supersaver via Chicago for Jan. 31. At chch, the NSF office had reserved a United Flight 12 at 8:45 am the 22nd. I called American to see if I could get on the Supersaver equivalent & keep the price by going standby. They said yes. plenty of room. I had a good bath (tub) a fried clam dinner, & a good steep 10-6 am. [[underlined]] Friday Jan. 22 U.S. LA time. [[/underlined]] Woke up 1/2 hr. before my call & so had plenty of time to prepare of or 7:00 ride to AA. Got in line and tried to sort out my ticket. I said I would go standby if that would save fare -- explained the the UA res. was made for me in chch not at my request. The clerk said I would have to pay $20 more on the Chicago leg, & $20 more on the Boston leg: 3 & $40. (!).
