a few steps, switched us off to Ea. other. A wild wild polka. Whirling & whirling until I couldn't see straight. I was whirled backward. Never quite got step but hung on to end, barely. I still had to straighten out things in bags, shower, & plan to get to lobby at 7:30 for ride to airport. Alarm for 6:00 -- to dress, pack, reserve room for Tom, write Tom & check out. good sleep.

Awoke ~ 5:15 & tried to rest til 6:00. Got up ~ 5:55 dressed, went down for breakfast. The whole place was dark & deserted. That surprised me because a sign by the telephone said we are at your service permanently 24 hrs per day -- Meaning, I guess, room service. Back in room I got a call to wake up at 6:30 -- asked for breakfast "Monte Carlo" — had it by 6:45. So I was all set — clean, packed, fed, & down stairs by 7:15. Early. Reserved room for Tom Mar. 16 & for us the 23-24-25. Had written him a postcard also this AM. so left that for mailing. Airport w Agent in 2 cars @ 7:30. checked in [[strikethrough]] 12 [[/strikethrough]] 14 bags (for [[strikethrough]] 4 [[/strikethrough]] 6 people). Had time for cafecito (to be sociable w others who had had nothing) & took plane at 8:45.

Window seat over wing w scratched pane. To Puerto Montt ~ 10:30. Had a few views of Mts & Lakes en route to P. Montt. Stepped onto top of stair outside at P.M. — rather chill breeze. Back in plane expecting gorgeous views of Islands & glaciers. Cloudy all the way. Several nicely displayed snacks. Minced mussels, cheese rolls — w or. juice : smoked chilean salmon-like trout w capers, cheese, ham — wine or water. After struggling w Portuguese-spanish — Found my seat mate, a very handsome man, speaks perfect English. An architect → P.A. for a few hrs to check on construction. choppy as we descend ~ 12:30. Here we come to this S. tip of land & con. V. gray &, I expect, chilly.

Landed & were met by agent — Not the same ebulliant type of agent as Jimmy of Santiago; silent but effective — we loaded into 2 cars and → town. Passed monument to the Center of Chile in middle of road. 1/2 to [[Avina?]] - 1/2 to S. Pole. Hotel Navigantes $38.00 (U.S.) & room like closet - no cross vent. View of tin roof. ~ 2:15 met Jeff Post, Jeff Stillwell & Luis in lobby to discuss
