day, & my Goretex pants & top were sheathed in ice -- outside but it never wet thru! I hung coat from rafters & sponged it down -- cleaned it as well as drying it. Sat around (on [[underlined]] v. [[/underlined]] cold seat) & began to edit my NAaT history. Woodbourne came in w Pete to go over notes & samples. He gave me a reprint of his & Bill's full description of the mound discovery. I had it autographed. Phil came in w penguin bones. After a while Jeff came in & I announced I didn't want to go to our box & get wet again. We decided not to. However, when he decided to go out later, I suggested he get microscope & sieves from box: He did, but we couldn't see without a light source (in tent). He packed & labeled all the fossils he collected yesterday using a thesis w pictures, and then left. I edited awhile longer. Bill came in all wet, stayed awhile & left. I decided I was getting too cold to stay there. Dan had turned off stove after lighting 3 Coleman lanterns. Staying warm requires activity. I came home expecting to find Tony -- Someone had reported seeing her come [[strikethrough]] it [[/strikethrough]] in. As I stepped out I found Marilyn coming home all sheathed in ice ^[[~4:15]]. But Tony was not here -- not in big house, not in cook tent (as I would hear her). The day has gotten awful. Cold, sleet & wind. I put up a stiff battle w new stove but got it lighted. now at 5:45 would like to doze off. I am getting worried about Tony. Unless she is in Brian's tent -- or Larry's -- which is possible, she is out in this horrendous afternoon.

I needn't have worried. She came into the big tent soon after Marilyn did and has been there ever since. Came here

~ 6:15. We are to celebrate Scott's birthday with steaks this evening. Tony came out of the wind saying that for all the misery & cold & effort, she just loves this place -- loves every bit of it. After all, she is young, starting a thesis on a remote Antarctic island and surrounded w boy friends. A great moment in her life. I'm glad she is here & that Smithsonian World is not. I can picture myself living alone in half a "lab tent" - Horrors! This morning she was nice enough to comment, as we got up, that everybody was so impressed w. me yesterday -- Saying I was putting them all to shame. And when she reported that my husband is in great shape they were doubly impressed. Obviously I did win my spurs.

For Scotts birthday we had our steaks with mashed potatos & corn. I brought 2 bottles of Gato Blanco but we drank only one. Tony found 2 sharks teeth in the Tertiary today - gave one to Scott for birthday. We also gave her the white cat on the wine bottle. We had a party of eight in cook tent: Tony, me, Fred, Charlie, Jeff Stillwell, Scott, Tim, and Brian Small. A great party. Scott opened a cornac[[cognac?]] and we passed the cup around and around. Wind ever stronger blowing snow & maybe snowing as well. Tents sheathed with ice on upwd side. Sounds like a long blow arising. To bed at 9:20.

Roused out ~ 9:00 & went to big tent. The whole landscape sheathed in ice. Icy on boards, icy on top of snow, icy on mud, and a thick coat of it on Tony's side of tent. Not a really good day; but Bill, Brian & others planning to go out for awhile. I thought, at first that we should go, but Jeff felt we would be of no use in field, nor it to us until Brian finds a good site for us to sample. We are not
