11:10 and enough for this Monday night.

Had arranged to have a communal breakfast in cook tent at 9:00. Scrambled eggs & bacon plus apple sauce - coffee. No bread in camp...just bisquick and pancake mix. We get no fiber except oatmeal. Spent late morning in big tent where Bill & Marilyn were packing fossils. An impossible field day except along the beach because thick wet snow blankets the entire scene. Cockburn Is is white & all the hills white. Not much wind & not very cold. In p.m. Jeff & I walked up beach to explore & look for plant fossils. The little penguin colony was gone -- all except one, who stood on a rock and quacked at us. It let us get very close, so we took pictures of each other leaning toward it over the same rock. Then it took off ahead of us, erect as could be, hurrying on its pink feet. Turned toward us again & challenged us. Flapped its flippers as though to hold us back -- defending territory? or expecting a fish? Followed us a little. At fossil site I found one good leaf on too big a rock slab, and half a leaf on one Jeff could trim with his hammer. Lots of carbonized wood. Back in camp I sat in big tent & discussed problems of Antarctic science & treaty w. Brian Huber, Mike, Pete Sadler, Steve, and Chaney. The money is available; the science often does not match what a scientist would do at home, with stringent refereeing of proposals. Some projects have ridiculously long lives -- yet, the money is there to perpetuate our presence. No solutions in sight.

I finally got chilled sitting there editing [[?]]. so came to tent, lit stove, and then turned it off to doze a little. Roused out ~ 7:00. filled lantern, put box at feet, and went to dinner -- chicken and rice w pear - pudding for dessert. It was 7:40 before we actually ate. I had to rouse out at 7:55 to go radio tent. This time we contacted the Duke & had one word w Buzy. He asked Bill about the weather and the Science, Bill spieled off how this is the worst season ever, w snow & wind & we are getting in partial days of science. Then the reception failed & we never got it good again. Finally agreed to try again at 7:00 A.M. I went back to supper & then had my pudding. Sat & talked w. Fred & Jeff S. for awhile, then came to tent where Toni & Phil were sharing a brandy. Lamp lit & stove to warm us up.

When we arrived it stayed light until 9:15-9:30 pm. at least light enough to read. Tonight it was dark before 9:00. It's been overcast every night & nearly every day.

We arrived on the 15th & have been here 12 days. We probably have exactly 2 weeks left. Tomorrow will be mid-season. To sleep ~ 10:10.

I screamed in the night -- the second time in camp. Tony was awake & said she was glad she was. I apologized in morning, but am helpless to guarantee no repeats. Also, it turned cold in the night. First night the pee froze in plastic pot.
